October 2008

Dear Friend of Music

Welcome . . .

Hi to all our enews subscribers and welcome to our Spring edition of Musicnotes. And a very warm welcome to all our new subscribers and those wonderful folk we have met and shared our music with over the last few months.

What’s New?

In our last Musicnotes we mentioned the forthcoming release of our new album Your Stage. Well, it has finally arrived and so far the feedback has been excellent.  Click here to order.

About Your Stage

Students, who are marginalised in some way, usually have some social difficulties that sabotage their efforts of connection.  This program provides and facilitates those connections while also actively developing self-esteem.  Alongside self-esteem development, activities facilitate explicit teaching of social skills including team work, sharing, waiting, leading, copying, self expression, idea initiation and relaxation.

What’s been happening?

Whew – Just like the old song says ‘We’ve been everywhere man!’

In June we went up to the Gold Coast (well, someone had to do it!) and had the pleasure of working with students at All Saints Anglican school ‘Livewire festival’ during their Arts week and we actually met some famous Aussie authors! Mind you they also got to meet us so it was a real win win!

Music styles Masterclass for the middle years
21st June 2008 – with Warren Wills & Susie Davies-Splitter

About 20 people turned up for the day – 2 secondary students, 2 tertiary students, primary and secondary teachers, instrumental./studio teachers as well as various musicians. People brought their clarinets, recorders, violins, guitars and keyboards – even a ukelele! As it was a day about ‘styles’ the workshop was divided into 3 parts – the blues, Latin/tango and Broadway musical genre. The day included singing, movement and dance, discussions about styles, demonstrations at the piano and lots of playing the ‘Orff’ instruments and participants’ instruments

Session 1 – Blues and variations  (pop and rock)

History – origin of 12 bar blues

The blues, or delta blues was a vibrant musical import from Africa to the Southern States of USA, and born out of slavery. This was set against a more traditional US ‘folk’ sound of the time of the early 20th century as presented by Foster and orchestrally displayed by Copeland. Given the basic nature of the blues instrumentation, guitars and harmonicas, blues became a heartfelt cry of the plight of the Afro-American slave and moved in a radically different direction to Negro Spiritual/Gospel.

The basis of the Blues was a simple 3 chord progression, set over a 12 bar pattern, that continued for several verses. The simple idea was elaborated upon once migration had begun, and a greater sophistication occurred in instrumentation.

Once Trad Jazz took hold and trombones, clarinets and trumpets became the popular musical form of the day, the Blues became a more upbeat, optimistic form of musical expression-Louis Armstrong is a great example of this. The harmonic vocabulary was the same, but the arrangement, tempo, lyrical content had more of a ‘swing’ feel, and less of a ‘shuffle’ feel.

Susie ran stage I of ‘The Joy of Jammin’ in Melbourne in July and we hope all of the participants are now happily improvising on a daily basis. She is hoping to run stage 2 next year so keep tuned for more information on that.

In July as the first stage of a 2 month trip we presented at the Cairns Music conference where Phil gave his keynote on stress called "I'm Not Stressed - I Always Look Like This" which went over very well plus we presented 2 fun workshops.

From there we headed to LA for a few days to catch up with our good friend Lynn and Steve Kleiner and to visit her summer school there Music rhapsody which was lovely.

We are planning joint workshops with Lynn in Oz for 2009 (see below for more info on this). Then it was off to Bologna, Italy for the 2008 ISME conference which was ‘hot hot hot’! Oh and the workshops were great as well as the networking with teachers and musos from all around the world.

After that we were off to Taiwan to present workshops for the Chinese Orff Association of Taiwan on Taichung and Taipei – complete with translator! Everything went well except for some of Phil’s jokes which definitely got lost in translation.

Susie flew back for a week in August to present a workshop on our new resource ‘Your Stage’ for aMUSE before meeting Phil in Singapore where they spent almost 3 weeks presenting at several conferences, including an Early childhood conference and a Storytellers conference whey they unveiled prototypes of their new story books ‘The Firemans’ Barbeque’ and ‘Rocket Sam’ which will be available here very soon. (Yes, we will let you know!)

Finally in early September we had the great pleasure of co-ordinating and presenting at the very first Orff conference in Singapore - MUSAIC (see report, below).

On our return to Oz we weren’t home long before we were up in Sydney presenting at the ‘Lifestart’ early intervention conference, once again using some of our new songs from ‘Your Stage’ which were received very well.

Just recently Susie presented at the Kindermusik conference on the Sunshine coast (what can we say?) and even more recently have been way out west in Port Fairy doing children’s shows at the Port Fairy consolidated school as part of the Spring music festival.

Musaic 2008 – an international Orff Schulwerk Singposium in Singapore

Musaic 08, was the first ‘Orff’ international conference in Singapore held over the 3rd to the 5th of September. Phil and I were privileged to help co-ordinate this historic event together with Patricia Koh, and her wonderful team from Pat’s Schoolhouse and Knowledge Universe.  The guest presenters included – Doug Goodkin (USA), Denise Gagne (Canada), Sarah Brooke (Australia), Warren Wills (London), Susie Davies-Splitter & Phil Splitter (Australia) and Patricia Koh (Singapore). Other esteemed presenters from Australia and Singapore took electives – Ruth Friend, Beth Rankin, Susanne Khalek, Andrew Robertson, Carolyn and Allan Watson and Dr Ros McMillan.

About our music keynotes

Phil’s musikeynote address "I'm Not Stressed I Always Look Like This" delivered at Cairns Music Conference 14th July 2008 was met with enthusiasm by the eager music teacher delegates.  It served as a great ice breaker and got the crowd totally involved with audience participation and buzzing with laughter. The hour session had good flow with a mix of speaking and music-making with the help of Susie singing some of their original and uplifting songs.

The topic was very relevant to the audience and Phil skillfully balanced the serious and humorous side of the talk. Everyone went away thinking how to put into practice his tips on what causes stress and how to manage it, but had sore cheeks from laughing so much as well.

About our songs

Just had a great day with grade 4 and Wet Day Blues. We wrote some simple riffs for marimbas, Xylophones and glockenspiels in the chorus and added a few non-tuned instruments. Over the next few weeks we’ll add and refine. The students can immediately relate to the music in this series, memorise their parts and are starting to get the feel. Really enjoying this series.

Hi Susie and Phil,

Recently my primary school choir sang "The Green and the Gold" for the school community to celebrate Australia's participation and achievements in the Olympics.

Everyone loved it and we received many compliments.

Thank you so much for creating music that is easy to learn, fun to sing and beautiful to listen to!

About our professional development

August 2008

Dear Susie and Phil :

We love your singing and in the way that you helped us to approach the improvisation. Those songs that you chose for us were impressive. You had us sing in harmony. We all benefited from the ensemble you had us form. The step by step pedagogy was practical and effective. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge experience and wonderful performances with us.

Dear Susie and Phil :

We appreciate that you showed us all the inspiring variety of music. It was a wonderful musical journey. Your rap was amazing and we were very impressed with all of your performance.

The teaching for kids under 3 years old was fresh. Through your creative concept of the class and the great wisdom in your publications we could feel your strong and sincere efforts in the field of music education. We love your voice and we think that you are a wonderful singer. Phil has an excellent sense of humour and he is also a great musical partner. You have a great team. We felt that you gave the class more depth by including Dalcroze, Kodaly, Yamaha and E. Gordon. You not only shared with us the joy of music but you also expanded our knowledge of music and teaching.
