Phil's PHILosophy

Dear John Smith,

Welcome to this edition of Musicnotes where we look at a couple of new resources, our 'Hearts in Harmony' day coming up in Melbourne, PLAyshops with IJAM in Brisbane and Sydney in June, a fascinating article about NAPLAN (The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy), an opportunity to attend a 'Welcome to Music' PLAYshop for free, Phil's PHILosopy and lots more.

You can even help Phil win a guitar - and who wouldn't want to do that?

So take a few minutes, read on and enjoy...

Yours in harmony,

Susie & Phil

NAPLAN - Good or bad?

Richard Gill, well known choral conductor and music director of Victorian Opera, has written a very interesting article about NAPLAN (The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) that was published in the Sydney Morning Herald earlier this year. It's worth a read as it gives you something to think about in regard to the future of education in Australia.

New resource - 'AlphabetZ'

You might recall that in 2009 we had the pleasure of writing and recording a bunch of alphabet songs for Maureen Pollard's wonderful literacy resource 'Milo's Birthday Surprise'. Maureen is a literacy consultant who is passionate about helping teachers and parents understand the skills involved in teaching children to read and write and she has a business called 'Little Learners Love Literacy'. (http://www.littlelearnersloveliteracy.com)

Now we are delighted to announce that we are releasing our own version of the songs on an album called 'AlphabetZ' - 26 original and fun character songs from A to Z, with a focus on literacy, for children up to 8 years. This resource will come with a music book that includes photocopyable melody lines, chords and lyrics. This fabulous new resource will be available very soon and we 'betz you'll just love it!

New resource - 'Your Stage' Music book

Many of you will be familar with our resource 'Your Stage' -a specially designed program for inclusion that provides opportunities for each individual to shine. The text is by Mary Brake and we have composed and recorded all the songs and it has been a huge hit, not just for those dealing with special needs but also for general early childhood teachers. After many requests we have now produced as a companion to the book and CD, a music book - with lyrics, melody lines and chords. Click here to view and/or order this useful new resource .

Like to enjoy some 'Vintage Red'?

Given Susie and Phil's passion is music it will probably come as no surprise that thay are in a band - well a trio at least, with their good friend and talented muso Russ Castleman. They call themselves 'Vintage Red'. Susie, Phil and Russ combine their collective talents with keyboard, acoustic guitars and mellow 3 part harmonies to present a selection of vintage songs from the 50's through the 80's, from vintage performers and bands they would have all liked to have been in! With the option of adding bass and drums Vintage Red is great for any occasion.

So if you're in Melbourne and looking for a band for your next celebration, party or anything where good music will be appreciated, please contact Phil at phil@welcometomusic.net and mention 'Vintage Red'. They even have their own Facebook page - click here to check it out (and maybe even click 'like'- if you like it!)

Vintage Red will be appearing at a free lunchtime concert at ACU in Melbourne on May 16 with Susie's 'Hearts in Harmony' choir. Click here for details

What people are saying

"Phil, we really enjoyed your music program and I know that I received a great deal of positive feedback from the parents as their children would ask every morning; “Is it Thursday today? Is it a Phil day?” I think it is a sad thing these days that we haven’t more men in the industry as men bring a different dynamic to the program." Dianne Goodall, Director, Surrey Hills Preschool

"Hi Phil,I can't tell you how much I appreciated having you at the Knox festival today - I told my husband Andy it was a bit like the Queen coming to support the school bake sale!! The performance was great!! Certainly adds a lot of energy, and the kids thought it was a great novelty - my kids went to bed talking about Funkey Monkey - 'the REAL Funkey monkey, not the toy one!' I know your time is precious, and I really valued your time and input at the marquee too - so once again Thank you" Kate Phillips, Mini Maestros Franchisee

"Dear Susie and Phil, I have just received your recent newsletter. Thank you very much, they are always filled with so much valuable information and it really helps to keep in touch with what is happening in music education within Australia." Karen Wandel, Preparatory Music Specialist, SA
